Setting Goals

“Give me a stock clerk with a goal and I’ll give you a man who will make history. Give me a man with no goals and I’ll give you a stock clerk.” – James Cash Penney

There are two ways to get what you want out of life: You can either wait for good things to come your way or you can get out there and start making them happen for yourself. The first way is easier. The second way is quicker and more effective. I’m here to tell you that the simple act of writing down your goals will greatly increase your odds of getting what you want. All it takes is a pencil and a piece of paper. Take a moment now to write down 10 goals for yourself. If the idea of setting goals is too intimidating, or if you find that you’re limiting yourself, just write down 10 things you want. Anything you want, write it down, and getting those things will become your goal.

Remember to be specific. Make your goals measurable. Jack Canfield, co-creator of the bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul book series and author of The Success Principles: How to Get From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be, says that the two questions you want to ask yourself when setting a goal are “How much?” and “By when?” Instead of saying “I want to be rich,” say “I want to have $1,000,000 in the bank by midnight on January 1, 2020.” If you want more money, decide exactly how much you would like to make. If you want to improve your relationships, decide exactly how you would like them to be. If you want to lose weight, decide exactly how much you would like to weigh. Take a look at your 10 goals. Could they be more specific? Could they be more measurable? If so, make the necessary changes and then you’ll be ready to start taking steps towards accomplishing them. Life is a series of choices. Make a choice today to make goal-setting a part of your routine. Once you do, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

How to Get Everything You Want in Four Simple Steps

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , on July 12, 2010 by jamesxavis

“People begin to become great when they determine their major definite purpose–their number one goal–and work on it every day.” – Brian Tracy

Last week I told you that you can be, do, and have everything you want, but that it won’t happen overnight. You have to chip away at it one day at a time. Today I’m going to give you the actual steps you’ll need to take to make that happen. This is based on a method taught by Brian Tracy, Chairman and CEO of Brian Tracy International. The four simple steps are:

1. Set a goal

2. Set a deadline

3. Make a list of everything you can think of to do to achieve the goal

4. Do something every day that moves you one step towards the goal

Before you get ahead of yourself, remember that just because these steps are simple doesn’t mean they’ll be easy. Some goals may be a breeze to accomplish. Others may require you to take action you never thought you were capable of. The secret is to grow into your role as a self-creator one day at a time, and as you do, you will become more and more capable of accomplishing your goals quickly and easily. In the next few weeks, I’ll go into more detail on the importance of each of these four steps, as well as answer any questions you may have about the process. Have a great week and take this opportunity to begin moving towards your vision of a perfect future.

Celebrate Your Freedom

“People who exercise their embryonic freedom day after day, little by little, expand that freedom. People who do not will find that it withers until they are literally ‘being lived.’ They are acting out scripts written by parents, associates and society.” – Stephen R. Covey

Hello, everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful Fourth of July weekend. In keeping with the themes of freedom and independence, I’d like to take this opportunity to talk to you about your own personal freedom. There are times when you might feel like you’re trapped or powerless. You might feel like you’re a victim of circumstance with no control over your life. I’m here to tell you that nothing could be further from the truth. You have the power to make your life whatever you want it to be, but before you can do that, you have to take responsibility for your own freedom. The famous prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr sums it up beautifully: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Knowing the difference is the key here. Don’t accept an aspect of your circumstances that is not in line with your vision of a perfect future if there is something you can do to change it. If you’re unhappy about your job, your family, or yourself, do something about it. Do everything that you can, and pretty soon you’ll see how much freedom you really have. What can you do? Read every day. Watch videos of inspirational speakers. Listen to audiobooks in the car on your way to work. Learn new skills that will help you solve your problems. Read books on business, relationships, or fitness, and then apply what you’ve learned to your daily life. You can be, do, or have anything you want, but it won’t happen overnight. You have to chip away at it one day at a time. Choose your future, then take action each day to bring yourself one step closer to it. That’s what it means to truly be free.

Welcome Back

“You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” – Zig Ziglar

Welcome back to Your World is What You Make It! If this is your first time here, feel free to browse through my old posts at jamesxavis.wordpress.com. Why the reboot? Two reasons: One, this is my first post in six months and I think it’s time for a fresh start. And two, James Xavis is way too hard to remember. So I’d like welcome you to the new and improved changeyourmindset.wordpress.com!

It’s pretty simple, really. I’m here to help you get what you want. Does that mean I have all the answers? Not likely. Like I said, I’m here to help you get what you want. Most of the grunt work will be on your end (sorry if you were looking for a quick fix). I believe we all have useful advice to offer, so I would just like to contribute mine. If it helps, great. If not, I encourage you to seek answers elsewhere. We’re all here to help each other and I’m simply taking the opportunity to do my part.

I’ll continue updating this blog every week with more tips, tricks, and inspirational videos, but I hope you’ll write in every now and then so we can discuss any problems you may be struggling with in your life. Then we can begin working together to find a solution. I promote open discussion, so if someone else leaves a comment describing a problem you think you can help them with, please feel free to do so. Remember, we’re all in this together. Let’s make this world a better place.
